Lucie de Moyencourt was born in Paris and raised in Cape Town, the daughter of a well-known antiques dealer and a ballet dancer, a combination that, in retrospect, explains a great deal about her work. She trained as an architect at the University of Cape Town, then spent years as a film set designer before the making took over entirely. Shellegance began in 2018, after a ceramics class she was dragged to by a friend. The shells were initially made for her own courtyard, part inspired by Matisse cut-outs, part by a lifetime of collecting shells by the sea. 

Each shell is individually hand-crafted and hand-painted, no two are ever the same in shape, colour, or brushwork. The ceramic studio team forms the shells; Lucie paints every one herself. Shellegance was created to bring shells into the interior space in a non-kitsch way, which is the exact tension the work holds. These are objects that could easily tip into coastal decoration. They don't. The scale, the painting, the variety of surface, they read as art, not accessory.
