Lucie de Moyencourt was born in Paris and raised in Cape Town, the daughter of a well-known antiques dealer and a ballet dancer — a combination that, in retrospect, explains a great deal about her work. She trained as an architect at the University of Cape Town, then spent years as a film set designer before the making took over entirely. Shellegance began in 2018, after a ceramics class she was dragged to by a friend — the shells initially made for her own courtyard, part inspired by Matisse cut-outs, part by a lifetime of collecting shells by the sea. 

Each shell is individually hand-crafted and hand-painted — no two are ever the same in shape, colour, or brushwork. The ceramic studio team forms the shells; Lucie paints every one herself. Shellegance was created to bring shells into the interior space in a non-kitsch way — which is the exact tension the work holds. These are objects that could easily tip into coastal decoration. They don't. The scale, the painting, the variety of surface — they read as art, not accessory.
