An original hand-painted elephant in ceremonial dress, with a jewelled headpiece, anklets and a patterned blanket. Made in Udaipur, Rajasthan, in the dot technique, on genuinely old paper, with natural pigments. Black dots pick out the jewellery and a little orange warms the trunk and ear. Work in ink is harder than work in colour. There is little colour to lean on, so every dot shows. It takes the painter six to seven days to complete.

Each piece is hand-painted, so there will never be another exactly like it. Each carries the marks of the painter's hand.
