The Belles Rives Tray, designed by London-based Interior Decorator and writer Rita Konig, began with a butler’s tray — those 19th century mahogany trays with the waved edge. That’s how Rita describes it, and the simplicity of that origin is exactly what makes it so enduring.

Rita has been collaborating with The Lacquer Company since 2010. The Mini is the tray at its most personal. Small enough for a bedside table, a dressing table, or the corner of a desk that deserves to look this good. Deep enough to hold a candle, a watch, a stack of rings, or whatever lands there at the end of the day.

On colour, Rita is characteristically direct: the less you match the colour to the space, the better — the more unexpected, the bigger the impact.

As for the making: Son Mai is an ancient Vietnamese craft. Not spray painting. Multiple layers of natural lacquer, wet-sanded between each coat and reapplied by hand. The depth in the colour, the softness of the edges — you can imagine each layer being sanded back and reapplied. These are pieces made by artists, designed to last and improve, and to keep an ancient craft alive.
