Rani Moochhala had spent her career in textiles and fabric when she came off maternity leave in 2017 looking for her next project. She noticed something the market had overlooked: handmade wrapping paper, made properly, with no commercially viable option available anywhere. She built Paper Mirchi to fill that exact gap.

The process starts in her London design studio and ends in the historic paper-making region of Rajasthan, where Paper Mirchi works with small, family-run units whose skills have been passed down for generations. Every sheet begins as 100% recycled cotton rag — textile scraps and cotton waste, chopped, pulped, dyed and spread by hand across a mesh screen. No trees, no pulp mills, just a centuries-old technique applied to a genuinely sustainable material. The technique extends to hand-marbling and block printing, where oil-based colour is floated on water and hand-carved wooden blocks press pattern into each sheet — meaning no two sheets, however similar, are ever truly identical.
