Alice Mary Lynch
Somerset, United Kingdom
Alice Mary Lynch grew up the daughter of two painters in rural Somerset, surrounded by hand-painted walls, charcoal sketches, and a household where the conversation rarely strayed far from art. A love of theatre and costume pulled her toward fashion design, and after training she set sail for Paris, honing her craft alongside designers including John Galliano and Sonia Rykiel.
It was there, working at the highest level of couture, that she developed the exacting hand-finishing that runs through everything she makes now. She has since opened her own studio back in Somerset as a textile artist, designer and illustrator, breathing new life into forgotten fabrics and treasures. Her work has been exhibited in Paris, London and Somerset, featured in The Times, Country Living, Elle Decoration and Harpers Bazaar, and made for clients including Fortnum & Mason, Harrods, Anthropologie, Alice Temperley, Victoria Beckham and The Newt in Somerset.
The hand-painted wooden decorations we carry come from that same imagination — inspired, in her words, by "nature's circus and subconscious reveries," each one a tactile keepsake made to be brought out, treasured and passed on through the years. Made, as she puts it, "to make your heart flutter."
We carry Alice Mary Lynch because her work treats a small wooden decoration with the same seriousness as couture, bringing a sense of magic and charm that lasts far beyond a single season. These are the ornaments that are brought out year after year, and eventually handed on.
