Mayan Hands, Guatemala

MAYAN HANDS, GUATEMALA

Deep in the rural highlands of Guatemala, 200 craftswomen are keeping centuries-old traditions alive — not as a relic, but as a livelihood.

Mayan Hands is a fair-trade nonprofit working with 15 artisan groups across this remote landscape, where women speak K’iche’, Kaqchikel, Tz’utujil, and Achí — languages that predate the Spanish conquest. Their work began with backstrap loom weaving, one of the oldest textile techniques in the world, and has grown to encompass pine needle basketry, crochet, macramé, needle felting, and embroidery — each piece a record of a place, a hand, a skill passed down.

What sets Mayan Hands apart is longevity. Some of these partnerships span more than 30 years — a commitment to economic sustainability and education that allows women and girls to build futures for themselves and their families, without leaving the culture they cherish.

At The Voyage Dubai, we carry Mayan Hands because we believe the objects in our homes should carry meaning as well as beauty. To bring one of these pieces home is to hold something genuinely irreplaceable.
