Two Birds, my thoughts on housewarming gifts

A while ago a friend gifted me two sculptural, ceramic birds. I loved them immediately. They were handmade in her home country.  Nothing about them was obvious or expected. They have lived in our family room ever since, among a handful of other pieces I genuinely love. I look at them every single day and every time I also think of her.

That's the real test of a gift: whether it survives the occasion it was bought for. Most don't. But something personal, something that actually took a moment of thought, keeps doing its job years later.

Nowhere does that matter more than a new home. Nothing there feels like yours yet, not really. That's the hardest part of moving somewhere new, more than the boxes or the unfamiliar rooms.

A gift that's genuinely personal becomes an instant memory.

What made the birds special wasn't that they were unusual, though they were. It's that my friend had actually thought about me specifically, from the story behind them and how they were made, down to the colour. She didn't just grab the nearest generic thing. Those are really the questions worth asking: Does this make sense for them? Does this make sense coming from you?

So if someone you know is moving house, skip the diffuser. Find the one thing that's actually them, or actually you, and give them that instead. It'll still be sitting on a shelf being looked at long after everything else from that week is forgotten.
