Gavin Houghton calls his own career a "typical creative zigzag." Born in Hertfordshire to artist parents, he studied menswear at Kingston before deciding it was interiors, not fashion, that held him. A week in the fabric room at The World of Interiors became a job when its legendary editor Min Hogg made him an editorial stylist; from there came David Collins Studio, a return to World of Interiors as art director and later the same role at Vogue. Art direction, interiors, ceramics, painting — the thread through all of it is a practical, playful eye and a love of colour.

The watercolours we carry come out of that same eye, drawn from the Mediterranean and North African world he returns to again and again. Tangier rooftops and archways, feluccas on the Nile, men in fezzes and striped djellabas — painted loose and saturated, with obvious delight and no reverence at all.

We carry Gavin Houghton because his paintings do something most art for the home doesn't: they command a wall without taking themselves too seriously. The current series has sold out, but new work can be commissioned — get in touch to find out more.
