How to Tell Handmade from Mass-Produced

Words like "artisan" and "handcrafted" are thrown around a lot these days. "Studio pottery" can mean a single designer signed off on a shape that a robot then produced ten thousand times. The language of handmade has been borrowed so thoroughly by mass production that it no longer tells you anything on its own.

These are the things that actually do.

Turn it over.
The base of a ceramic piece is the least considered surface — which makes it the most honest. A handmade piece will often show a wire-cut mark where it was sliced from the wheel, a slightly rough or uneven foot ring, or the impression of a thumb used to steady it during finishing. A machine-made piece has a base that is perfectly smooth and uniform, because a machine finished it that way. If the bottom looks as finished as the top, that's usually your answer.

Look at the throwing lines.
Wheel-thrown ceramics carry the spiral record of their own making — faint ridges that rise from base to rim where a potter's hands lifted the clay. Genuine throwing lines have uneven spacing: wider near the base where the pull began, tighter near the rim where speed increased. Some manufacturers now add imitation throwing lines to mass-produced pieces. The difference is straightforward — machine lines repeat at identical depth and spacing, like a pattern. Real ones don't.

Watch the glaze.
Hand-applied glaze behaves unpredictably in a kiln. It pools slightly in the recesses, thins at the edges, occasionally runs a millimetre before it sets. These variations are not flaws — they are the direct result of a person applying glaze by hand to a surface that is never perfectly uniform. A machine-glazed piece has a finish that is consistent from edge to edge, with no pooling, no variation.

Hold it to the light — glassware especially.
Hand-blown glass traps small bubbles and faint striations in the moment of its making. Hold a piece to natural light and look through the wall: tiny imperfections suspended in the glass are evidence of a breath, a temperature, a specific moment. Perfectly clear, completely uniform glass was made by a machine. Also look at the base for a pontil mark — a small scar left where the blowpipe was separated. It's not always present, but when it is, it's unambiguous.

Check the weight.
Handmade ceramics are often heavier than their machine-made equivalents, because the walls vary in thickness — a hand cannot hold perfect consistency across the entire surface in the way a mould can. Pick up two similar pieces side by side if you can. The one that feels more substantial, less uniform in its weight distribution, is usually the handmade one.

Read the maker's mark carefully.
A hand-stamped or hand-painted maker's mark — slightly off-centre, with minor variation in the ink — is a good sign. A laser-printed logo, perfectly centred, identical on every piece, is not. Some makers sign individual pieces by hand; that signature, however small, is the most direct evidence available that a person made this.

None of these tests is conclusive on its own. A very skilled handmade piece might fool two of them. But taken together, they build a picture — and once you know what you're looking for, the difference between something made by a person and something made by a machine becomes very difficult to unsee.
