How to choose the right tablecloth size

How to choose the right tablecloth size - The Voyage Dubai

This is a question we get asked a lot, and so we've put together a guide to help make the process easier. We'll preface by saying the below are guidelines and ultimately if you love it, then go for it, we believe rules are made to be broken.

The most common mistake when buying a tablecloth relates to the drop. The drop is the amount of fabric that hangs over each side of the table, and it's what makes the difference between a table that looks dressed and proportionally correct — and one that looks off.

The drop rule

For everyday use, aim for a drop of 20–30cm on each side. For formal dining or a more dramatic look, 30–40cm works well. Anything beyond 40cm can read as theatrical unless you're going floor-length intentionally — which is a look in itself.

To calculate the cloth size you need, measure your table length and width, then add twice your desired drop to each measurement.

For example: a 200cm x 90cm table with a 25cm drop needs a cloth of at least 250cm x 140cm.

Round tables

The same logic applies. Measure the diameter and add twice your desired drop.

For example: a 120cm round table with a 25cm drop needs a cloth of at least 170cm in diameter.

Extendable tables

On a rectangular table with leaves or extendable sections, always measure at full extension. A cloth that fits your everyday table will look skimpy when you seat ten for a dinner party.

What about runners?

A table runner typically sits 15–20cm from each end of the table, with 30–40cm of overhang on each side. Runners work best paired with placemats — the runner anchors the centre of the table and the mats define each place setting.
